What real evolution is like

Just-so stories not only fail to deliver the goods, they create an impression at odds with what we now know to be a very complex set of interactions whose fine structure we appear not to have much of a handle on. Yet another reason to be cautious when we tell tall evolutionary tales and criticize proposals on "but how did it evolve?" grounds.
