The Evolution of Complexity

There seems to be some discussion in the bio literature about the sources of "complexity." A standard position is that Natural Selection is required for complexity to arise. This is roughly Dawkin's view.  This article discusses some other non-selection sources for complexity's evolution.  I suspect that this might be of interest for linguists interested in the question of how language might have evolved.
